History

The company was formed in 1879 with a capital of 1,5 million Swiss Francs. Over the years, the face value of the shares shrank from 1000 Fr. to 5 Fr. The company worked until 1970, when it went into liquidation, a process that ended in 1980.Personally signed by Johann Rudolf Geigy-Merian (1830-1917). He and his Son Dr. Rudolf Geigy count as founders of the Basel chemical industry, of world importance today (Ciba-Geigy, Sandoz, Hoffmann-Laroche). The former J.R. Geigy A.G. amalgamated in 1970 with Ciba A.G. to form Ciba-Geigy. This company merged in 1996 with Sandoz and the combination is known today as the multinational Novartis.
